Eddie Alvarez wasn’t too pleased to learn that Conor McGregor was privy to his contract details ahead of their lightweight title fight at UFC 205 on Nov. 12, 2016 in New York City.
So you know he’s not going to be thrilled to hear Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father claiming that “The Eagle” was used as a leverage tool to get both Alvarez and McGregor to agree to lower terms for their upcoming title fight.
According to Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s comments to Match TV (via Bloody Elbow), the reason why Khabib was given two contracts (see them here), was simply to scare both “Notorious” and his opponent into accepting lesser payouts at UFC 205 in order to avoid having to fight his son.
His words:
“By sending a contract to Khabib, the UFC has reduced the overall cost of UFC 205 by $4 million dollars. According to rumors, McGregor wanted to fight for six or seven million, and Alvarez for one million. At this point, Khabib was sent two contracts and he signed them. Alvarez with McGregor then calmed down because nobody wanted to fight Khabib. As a result, Alvarez will earn $500,000 and McGregor around $3.5 million. There are some bonuses, but the fact is that they have halved the fees. That’s for sure. Khabib was offered $100,000 compensation for the cancelled fight. He refused, and said: ‘Give me the opportunity to fight the best.’ On the same evening, he was offered a fight with Michael Johnson for the same fee.”
Alrighty then.
Of course, one can see why so many people will be skeptical of these claims, as it is no secret McGregor seemingly has unlimited power when it comes to negotiating his fights and payouts.
So says Dana White.
Plus, Alvarez has already stated he will be making millions off his fight against McGregor, so which side you believe is entirely up to you.
